Problem Specification (4 marks)

Official mark bands

1–2 marks: Outlines a problem scenario. States limited success criteria. Outlines the nature of the solution in a computational context.

3–4 marks: Describes the problem scenario in terms of its measurable solution requirements. States appropriate success criteria. Explains the choice of computational context for the solution.

What examiners check for
  • A target demographic identified — a user group, not one named formal client.
  • The core inefficiency in the current real-world situation, described specifically.
  • Why software (vs. a non-software fix) actually solves it.
  • 5–7 measurable success criteria, each testable as a binary yes/no — not vague adjectives like “easy to use.”
Common mistake

Writing subjective success criteria such as “the app will be easy to use and fast” — examiners can't test that objectively. Rewrite as something measurable: “a user can complete a booking in under 60 seconds.”
